Star Performances and Defense Shine as Cate Polo Conquer Villanova Prep

October 19, 2023

Christian Busse, Myles Warren, and a stellar defense lead Cate to victory in a standout performance against Villanova Prep

Yesterday, October 17th, the Cate boys water polo team traveled to Ojai for a league match against Villanova Prep. The game versus Villanova was one of our three remaining games, all-league contests. There was a different focus and intensity our guys approached the game with; it was exceptional.

Busse ’25 scored the first goal with a front-court skip shot into the right side of the cage.

Kicking things off in the first, we jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game. Christian Busse ’25 got us going with an excellent front-court skip shot from the right side of the cage. Busse has been putting a lot of extra work into his game, and it has been paying off through his recent string of stand-out performances. Myles Warren also put together a great show. Myles is always tough as nails on the defensive end of the pool, but today, he got going offensively. After Villanova’s goalkeeper was excluded, Miles scored his first goal on an outside shot. His next bucket came off of a coast-to-coast takeaway to lob shot finish.

Other Rams who found the back of the net were Remy Minnis ’24 (3), Baye Breene ’25 (2), Phin Stephenson ’25 (2), Emil Arconian ’26 (1), and Lucian Tann ’26 (1). Fernando Baldochi ’24 had a terrific game as the goalkeeper. Baldochi would only give up two goals during his time in the cage while racking up a plethora of saves. He also contributed multiple assists on full-court counterattack outlet passes. Defensively, Baye Breene, Elliott Paige ’26, and Ashwin Patel ’26 stood out. Their defensive ball pressure and off-ball positioning allowed them to rack up multiple steals and limit Villanova’s scoring output.

Ultimately, we would leave Villanova with a 12-8 win. I was delighted with the game we played. Our team put together four-quarters of clean polo. There are still crucial areas of our game that need improvement to be the best version of ourselves going forward. We will continue to train hard and look to finish the regular season with positive momentum into the playoffs.
