For the second time in two weeks, the Cate football team won a nail biter, this time knocking off perennial Central Section power Fresno Christian 33-30. The Rams are now 3-0.
Fresno Christian got the scoring started. It wasn’t until the 2nd quarter until Cate got on the board with a 55 yard strike from Quinn Pullen ‘25 to Ethan Rehnborg ‘25. After an Eagles touchdown, the Pullen ‘25 to Rehnborg’25 connection struck again, this time from 17 yards out. At the half, Fresno Christian led 16-12.
Cate kicked off the second half scoring when Pullen ‘25 found Jacob Gabbay ‘25 for a 37 yard score. The rest of the third quarter was dominated by Fresno Christian. Going into the 4th, the Eagles were leading 30-19.
Needing a spark, the Rams found exactly what they were looking for when Josh Butler ‘26 picked off the Eagles quarterback and took the ball to the house, bringing the score to 30-27. The go ahead score came when Pullen ‘25 found Marcus Scudder ‘25 from 5 yards out. With about two minutes to go, Fresno had the ball deep in Cate territory on a 4th and 2. That’s when Davey Rissel ‘25 put an exclamation point on the victory with a sack.
Much like last week, there were too many great individual performances to single folks out, but the Cate defense deserves special recognition. The Rams bent but didn’t break and came up with stops late in the game. It was a special defensive performance.
What a ball game. The guys fought and scrapped and battled against a great team all afternoon. This group showed some serious heart today. We are so proud of all these guys.
