The Cate football team improved to 2-0 with a thrilling 29-22 Doubly Overtime win at CIF defending champion Chadwick on Saturday, September 21.

The Rams were victims of their own offensive miscues throughout the contest, but did just enough to pull out a win in an instant classic. After the Dolphins jumped about 7-0, quarterback Quinn Pullen ‘25 called his own number and scored from 7 yards out to even the contest. The Dolphins responded with a big score and that would be it for the first half. At the break, Chadwick led 13-7.

The second half started bumpy for the visitors, as the Rams suffered a safety on their first possession. Another Chadwick passing touchdown made the score 22-7 Dolphins going into the 4th quarter. That’s when the tide started to turn in favor of the Rams.

On 4th and long, Pullen ‘25 found Jacob Gabbay ‘25 for a 48 yard touchdown. After the two sides traded stops and turnovers, the Rams evened the score on a Pullen ‘25 20 yard run and a two point conversion.

In the first overtime, the Rams held the Dolphins and forced a turnover on downs. Cate was knocking on the door of a game winning touchdown, but the Rams suffered from the turnover bug , forcing Double OT.

In the second overtime, Cate marched down into the Dolphin red zone quickly and punctuated the drive with a Pullen ‘25 score from 5 yards out. The Cate defense ended the game with an emphatic stop.

There are too many great individual performances to acknowledge in a game like this. The entire team buckled down and played well when we had to. A special and acknowledgment to the defense, who was lights out for most of the game. We made plenty of mistakes and we will look to clean those up next week. But for now, we will celebrate a big win against a great team.

The Rams are back in action on Saturday, September 28 against Fresno Christian at home.
