Your Cate Rams Ultimate Frisbee team traveled to Santa Barbara this evening for a contest against Santa Barbara Youth Ultimate and lost 15 to 7. Santa Barbara came out of the gates hot and connected on short and long passes with ease and rhythm, establishing an early five point lead and never looking back. We struggled to find our footing on both offense and defense but showed flashes of potential here and there.
In the statsheet, Cate was again led by its three senior captains, Nyle Ahmad (1 assist), Josh Ludviksen (2 points), and Harry Su, who all showed grit, hustle, poise, and heart. Freshman Kendrick Suen continued to shine with 2 assists and 1 point, as well as several outstanding catches, including one excellent shoestring catch and another off of a deflection, which is becoming a bit of a trademark. Junior Luke Ashiku chipped in 1 goal and 1 assist, while junior Henry Chen, senior Chris Soto, and freshman Joel Oke added a goal apiece. Freshman Griffin Gruber again impressed, rounding out the stat sheet with 3 assists.
Other highlights from Cate included excellent diving catches by Gruber and sophomore Ian Duterte, strong cuts from freshman Alejandro Sandoval, and strong play and defense from sophomore James He, junior Andrew Peng, and senior Colby Roof. Many other players had strong showings as well, and everybody contributed today.
We ran into a better team today and didn’t do ourselves any favors. We made a few too many mistakes, and a strong opponent capitalized. This is a good learning moment for a young team, and we look forward to getting another chance at SBYU at home on the lower field on Thursday, October 17th, our next contest. We hope to see you there.
