Over the past few matches, Cate Girls Varsity Volleyball has experienced a mix of tough losses and solid victories. After falling to St. Bonaventure and Bishop Diego in four-set battles, the Rams bounced back with a dominant sweep over Foothill Tech, thanks to standout performances from Oyin Opawumi and Fallon Erickson. Cate continued their momentum with a 3-0 win against Villanova Prep, where Opawumi led the team with 26 kills. The Rams now look ahead to their senior night matchup against St. Bonaventure.
Cate girls’ tennis continues its dominant run, going 3-0 this week and improving to 11-1 overall and 7-0 in league play. Freshman standouts Ivy Huang and Jade Wang led the way, while doubles teams, including Lisa Hasebe and Colette Chang, remained undefeated. With three league matches left, Cate is closing in on another undefeated Tri-Valley League season and looks poised for a strong playoff run.
Cate football had an impressive two weeks, with the varsity team securing a thrilling 33-30 win over Fresno Christian thanks to late-game heroics, including a crucial pick-six by Josh Butler ’26 and a game-sealing sack by Davey Rissel ’25. The team then remained undefeated with a dominant 36-0 win over Santa Clara, highlighted by big plays from Quinn Pullen ’25 and Ethan Rehnborg ’25. Meanwhile, the JV squad opened their season strong with a 43-8 victory over Carpinteria, showcasing both offensive firepower and a stifling defense led by standout performances from multiple players. Next up, the Rams will travel to Laguna Blanca on Saturday, Oct. 12th.
The Cate Rams Ultimate Frisbee team faced a tough matchup against Santa Barbara Youth Ultimate, losing 15-7. Despite struggling with both offense and defense, the Rams showcased potential, especially through their senior captains Nyle Ahmad, Josh Ludviksen, and Harry Su, along with standout performances from freshman Kendrick Suen, who contributed 2 assists and made impressive catches. The game featured highlights like diving catches from Griffin Gruber and Ian Duterte, and strong cuts from Alejandro Sandoval. Although the team made mistakes against a strong opponent, they view this as a valuable learning experience and look forward to their next opportunity against SBYU at home on October 17th.

Following that, they faced Carpinteria and lost 12-9, despite another standout performance from Prince. At the Buena Ventura tournament, they achieved a record of 3-1, highlighted by Baye Breene’s remarkable eleven-goal game against Foothill Tech, leading them to a 20-11 win. However, they narrowly lost 10-9 to Malibu in their latest league match, despite strong performances from Breene and Brine. The Rams continue to show resilience and growth as they prepare for upcoming challenges, including a match against Calabasas High School next week.
