Cate 9
Royal 6
Yesterday, December 16th, our Cate girls varsity water polo team hosted a non-league match against Royal High School. The final score of the game was a 9-6 win for the Rams of Cate. This was a back-and-forth battle against a solid Royal team. Our offense seemed to hit its stride today and our team defense was on point for four straight quarters. The game was tied at the half but we were able to pull away in the second half based on steals leading to counter opportunities.
Our leading scorer on the day was Kate McCoy ’25 who finished the match with five goals. Kate scored two penalty shots early but managed to find the back of the net in a variety of ways. She had counterattacks, outside shots, and goals from the interior. It was a well-rounded game for the standout senior. Lucy Guilbert-Neal ’25 finished the contest with three goals on the day. Guilbert-Neal put away two penalties and a stellar power-play goal after the goalie had been excluded. Lucy has been steady for us all season in terms of her offensive production. She has been not just scoring, but handling pressure well and finding her teammates for scoring chances. Ani Van Lynde ’25 had a dominant game out of two meters. She scored a clutch goal in the third period to give us the lead and drew a staggering 4 penalties and an exclusion on top of it. She played nearly every minute of the game and was crucial for the team’s success. The defensive standout for the game was Daisy Gemberling ’25 in the cage, who finished the match with 12 saves. Tallulah Bates ’25 and Betsy Peters ’27 also contributed some stellar individual and team defensive efforts during the game.
Coach Morrison’s Quotes:
We needed a strong performance after two tough games against high-level opponents. It was great to see our group compete harder and play smarter as the game progressed. Looking ahead, we have another non-league game tomorrow at home against Oxnard High School. Go Rams!
