On the Mesa, where Cate’s teams compete with pride and purpose, the recent stretch featured program-defining moments, including five new swim records at the Tri-County Invitational, a five-game win streak for baseball, and key victories and resilience shown by the girls and boys lacrosse teams. Boys tennis bounced back with convincing wins, while boys volleyball continued to compete with grit and growth. Across every sport, Cate student-athletes continue to show heart, discipline, and the kind of development that builds lasting success.
The Cate Swim Team broke five school records at the Tri-County Invitational, competing against 300+ athletes from across three counties. The boys placed second overall, and the girls finished fourth. The Cate baseball team surged to a 7-3 overall record and 5-1 in league play after rattling off five straight wins. The Rams were led by dominant pitching performances from Peter Lehman ’25, who threw a 14-strikeout no-hitter against Villanova and a 15-strikeout complete game earlier in the week, and Quinn Pullen ’25, who struck out 10 and 12 in back-to-back complete games. Offensively, the Rams combined power and patience, piling up runs behind multi-hit efforts from Pullen, Chase Meyer ’26, Noah Casbarro ’26, and others. Cate also saw contributions from across the roster, including several varsity debuts, and used aggressive baserunning and stout defense to take command of each game.

The Rams picked up impressive wins over Thacher (10-5) and Dos Pueblos (14-13), led by standout midfield play from Sophia Ospina ’25, Maia Holmes ’26, and Lucy Guilbert-Neil ’25, while Chelsea Newlove ’28 anchored the defense with stellar performances in goal, including a 17-save outing. Despite losses to Bishop’s, San Marcos, and a rematch with DP, Cate’s midfield and defense showed consistent growth, with strong contributions from Lauren Hubbs ’26, Carmen Lack ’26, and Lorelei Roof ’26. The team continues to build momentum and chemistry heading into the next stretch of the season.
After a tough 7-11 loss to Camarillo on March 28, the Cate boys tennis team responded with back-to-back commanding victories over Villanova and Bishop Diego. Standout singles play from Kakeru Hirofuji ’27, James He ’27, and Bruce Li ’28, along with strong doubles performances from multiple pairings, propelled the Rams to a 5-1 record. Their 18-0 sweep of Bishop Diego highlighted the team’s depth and momentum as they gear up for a league-deciding match against Foothill Tech.
Though the Cate boys volleyball team faced six consecutive losses, including recent matchups against Bishop Diego and Laguna Blanca, the squad displayed resilience, standout individual performances, and promising development. Mack Nieman ’25 emerged as a consistent offensive force, leading the team in kills in both matches with impressive hitting percentages, while also stepping up on defense with 20 digs against Laguna Blanca. Freshman Kunqi Wang brought fresh energy and made an immediate impact with 12 digs in his debut. With continued growth and effort, the Rams are building a strong foundation for future success.
On the mesa, the Cate boys lacrosse team has found its stride, winning two of their last four games and building momentum as playoffs near. After opening the stretch with a strong win over rival Thacher, the Rams dropped two competitive matchups against Dos Pueblos before bouncing back in a big way with a 10-5 statement win over San Marcos on April 10. In the San Marcos victory, Cate’s veteran leadership and young talent combined to deliver a complete performance on both ends of the field. Cody Mast ’25 led the offense with a hat trick, while freshman Will Murray ’28 and several first-year contributors added key plays that highlighted the team’s growing depth. With their energy and execution continuing to improve, the Rams are proving to be a dangerous squad as the playoff race heats up.
