The Health Center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Health Center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Anytime the Health Center is not open, there is a registered nurse on call available for anything you may need.

Cate students may be seen by a clinic or private physician, and the School will provide transportation into  Carpinteria or Santa Barbara for urgent medical and dental appointments. A small fee ($30 round trip) will  be billed to the student’s account. If a parent needs the name of a local medical care provider, please contact  the Health and Wellness Center for referrals. It is best, however, if the Health staff schedule appointments for  boarding students. This allows the nurses to help students learn to manage both their time and their health.  Additionally, this allows the nurse to coordinate the needs of all students requiring transportation to and  from medical and dental appointments.

We allow all kinds of students to rest in the Health Center! Mental health breaks, cold and flu symptoms, and more walk through our door every day. The only time we don’t allow students to rest in the Health Center is if a student stays up too late for personal reasons and/or poor time management. It’s important to note that our Student Resting Room is an electronics-free zone to optimize your rest and get you feeling better again!

The Mesa Clinic is our isolation unit that we have on campus that is separate from the Health and Wellness House. Some reasons we have students stay at the Mesa Clinic are when students have a fever of 100.4º or greater, a gastrointestinal illness, or may have a potentially highly infectious illness that could easily spread to other students.

Please upload your new insurance information into your student’s Vital Health Record, and under the Magnus requirement “Proof of Insurance.” It is very important for our health team to have an active insurance policy on file for each student in case of emergency.

While students may have the HC cell phone number, it is important that students do not call the HC cell phone directly after HC hours. The reason for this is… safety! If the HC is closed, there may not be a nurse physically on campus, and it is important that another adult is aware that you are in need of medical attention. You are welcome to notify a dorm parent, a trusted adult, or the MOD in these situations. Whomever you notify will then notify the nurse on call if needed! Sometimes, we are on campus after hours, but it is never guaranteed.

Documentation:

  • All students must have a valid, and accurate medication authorization from their prescribing physician. This authorization expires 365 days from the previous one. The reason for this is that it is important that your student is having conversations about their medications with their prescribing physician annually at minimum.

Inventory:

  • We ask that parents/families drop off their medications with a health center staff member upon arrival to campus. This allows us to log, and inventory the medications and enter it into our Magnus Health system so we are able to properly administer and document that administration.

Administration:

  • Students are responsible for coming to the health center to retrieve their medication daily or as prescribed. We text and/or email students daily to remind them. Each time a student takes their medication(s), it is documented into our Magnus system. Students are not allowed to self carry medications unless under very specific circumstances (life-saving medications like Epi-Pens, inhalers, etc). If students need their medications after hours (the Health Center is open from 7:30am-7:30p Mon-Fri, and 7:30a-12:30p Sat/Sun), we have a process for that.

Refills:

  • When a student is starting to run low on medication, we a) request a refill from the pharmacy if it’s local and there are refills available b) reach out to families to request a refill on their students’ medication(s).  You are welcome to mail refills to the Cate Health Center. We ask that parents have their physician transfer their students’ prescriptions over to SavOn Pharmacy in Carpinteria or CVS Pharmacy in Carpinteria. Another great and easy option is using the Amazon Pharmacy.

Medications Over Breaks:

  • We package just enough medication for students to take home for their Fall Breaks, but for Winter, Spring and Summer breaks, we send the entirety of the students medication supply home with them due to the length of time they are away from campus. If the student is going to run out of medication while they are home, we will notify the parents/family prior to the student going home for break.

Please email the Health Center team at health_center@cate.org so we can make arrangements and an appointment block for you to utilize the Zoom Room in the Ellis House.

All of the Magnus Health forms must be completed prior to your student’s participation in any on-campus activities. Without a 100% complete Magnus profile, your student may not participate in any Cate School activities.
