Cate Rams Water Polo: A Rollercoaster Ride Through CIF Playoffs Ends with Historic Achievements

10/31: Dominating El Rancho – CIF Rd. 1
In a thrilling first-round CIF playoff clash, the Cate Rams showcased an offensive masterclass, securing an 18-13 victory against El Rancho High School. Remy Minnis ’24 and Baye Breene ’25 led the charge with eight and five goals, respectively, while stellar defensive efforts set the stage for a historic playoff run.

11/2: Triumph in Palm Springs – CIF Rd. 2
Cate continued their unprecedented journey in the CIF playoffs, defeating La Quinta High School 7-5 in a nail-biting encounter. The trio of Minnis, Breene, and Phin Stephenson ’25 spearheaded the offense, while an exceptional defensive display by Paige ’24, Stephenson, Warren ’24, and Baldocchi ’24 proved pivotal. The resilient Rams secured their spot in the quarter-finals, making school history.

11/7: Battling to the End – CIF Quarterfinals
Facing their toughest challenge yet against Ayala HS, Cate displayed unwavering determination. Despite trailing 11-2 at halftime, the Rams fought back valiantly, winning the second half 9-7. Minnis showcased his offensive prowess with six goals, but the team ultimately fell short with an 18-11 final score. Nevertheless, the Rams concluded a groundbreaking season, going further in CIF than any Cate water polo team. Gratitude was expressed to the seniors, Coach Wecker, the team, and the supportive Cate community, with anticipation building for the promising seasons ahead.

Cate Football Concludes Regular Season with Dominant Win, Advance to CIF Semifinals for Playoff Redemption

The Cate Rams wrapped up their regular season with an impressive 33-8 victory over Thacher, showcasing a stellar defensive and dynamic offensive performance led by Quinn Pullen ’25. Buoyed by this success, the team is now gearing up for a playoff clash against Flintridge Prep, seeking redemption after a close early-season loss. In a heart-stopping rematch, the Rams secured a spot in the CIF Southern Section Semifinals with a thrilling 33-25 win over Flintridge Prep. Quinn Pullen ’25 and Tyler Martinez ’24 dominated the field, while the defense, led by Johnny Foster ’25 and Riley Valente ’25, held firm in a back-and-forth battle. With the semifinals set to be hosted at Carpinteria HS, the Rams are poised for another exciting rematch, this time against Valley Christian. Fans can anticipate an electrifying Friday night showdown as the Rams aim for championship glory.

Cate Cross Country Shines at TCAA League Finals: JV Boys Finish Strong, Varsity Teams Secure CIF-SS Prelims Qualification

In an impressive display of athleticism, the Cate Cross Country team delivered standout performances at the TCAA League Finals held at Camino Real Park in Ventura. The JV boys showcased their talent, securing a second-place finish with Jackson Steele ’27 leading the pack and achieving a new personal best. The Varsity Girls clinched a notable 3rd place, earning them a spot in the upcoming CIF-SS D5 Prelims at Mt. Sac. The Varsity Boys, guided by the exceptional efforts of Seb Sutch ’24 and Everest Schipper ’24, finished second overall and secured qualification for the CIF-SS Prelims. In the girls’ JV race, Michelle Wu ’27’s strong performance and the team’s collective effort capped off a great day for the entire squad, consisting of 48 dedicated athletes. Congratulations and best of luck to the Varsity teams heading into the CIF-SS Prelims next Saturday (11/11).

Cate Tennis Triumphs: Rams Defeat Culver City to Capture CIF Division 3 Championship

Cate Girls Tennis showcased remarkable prowess in the CIF playoffs, commencing with a decisive 10-8 victory against Fullerton High School, propelling them to the CIF D3 Quarterfinals. The team continued its winning streak with a 12-6 triumph against defending CIF D4 Champion Mark Keppel, securing a spot in the CIF Semifinals. In a thrilling turn of events, the undefeated Cate team rallied from a 6-8 deficit to secure a come-from-behind 10-8 win against Cerritos High School, earning them a coveted spot in the CIF Finals for the first time since 1999. The team’s strategic lineup adjustments and stellar performances from Alyna Takahashi ’24, Lisa Hasebe ’27, and the entire doubles squad exemplify their commitment to each other and their pursuit of the CIF Championship. On Friday, Nov. 10, the Rams squared off against Culver City and pulled out to an early 6-1 lead before completing the 11-7 victory and with it, a perfect 17-0 season to bring home the first CIF title in program history!
