One of the four pillars of the mission statement, service, is a fundamental way of life both on and off campus at Cate. Students connect with the community weekly for Public Service Night, regularly volunteer at local food banks and shelters, hold holiday donation drives, and tutor at local elementary schools. The School also organizes two trips annually to Mexicali as part of its Los Niños service-learning trip.
Many of these volunteer efforts were in place 50 years ago, and longtime mathematics instructor, Sanderson Smith, detailed the role of the public service program in a 1978 Winter Cate Bulletin – including takeaways from the first-ever Los Niños trip.
“It is important that Cate students be made aware of actual problems that exist outside the classroom and that they be given the chance to help others; the public service programs continue to involve an impressive number of students and provide them with this significant dimension to the educational experience offered at Cate.”
