The Cate Swim team raced at the Tri Valley League Championship preliminary qualifying meet on Wednesday at the Ventura Aquatic Center. In a remarkable showing, every Cate athlete who raced yesterday in both the varsity and JV meets earned a spot in either championship or consolation finals for Friday.
The highlight of the day came in the final race, when Phin Stephenson ‘25 took control of the 100 breaststroke to set a new school record of 1:01.67, beating the mark set by his former teammate Cyrus Symington ‘23 last year. The time is also under the automatic qualifying standard for next week’s CIF D3 championships, so Phin guaranteed himself a spot at that meet.
Wil Rivera ‘27, Stella Rogers ‘25, Josiah Hansen ‘27, Angie Zoric ‘24 and Stephenson ’25 all grabbed top seeds heading into tomorrow’s varsity finals, while a host of other Cate swimmers earned 2nd, 3rd and 4th place positions, put up personal bests, and strengthened their CIF qualifying positions.
A more detailed recap of the meet will follow tomorrow’s finals. Stay tuned!
