The Cate Rams boys varsity basketball team turned in their most complete performance of the season, claiming an impressive 62-41 victory over Santa Clara for their first Tri-Valley league game. From start to finish, the Rams showcased a level of intensity and execution, particularly on the defensive end and on the glass, that was essential to the victory.
Defensively, the Rams brought a relentless energy that smothered Santa Clara’s offense. Marcus Scudder ’25 played a pivotal role in shutting down the Santa Clara team’s top scorer, preventing him from finding any rhythm throughout the game. Scudder’s lockdown defense was complemented by his own offensive contributions, as he finished with 18 points, including several key 3-point buckets that pushed the Rams ahead at the end of the first quarter 15-7.
Rebounding was another major factor in the Rams’ dominant performance. The team outmuscled Santa Clara on both ends of the court, securing a significant number of second-chance opportunities while limiting Santa Clara’s own offensive boards. Braylin Glomah’s ’27 (14 points) presence was especially felt in this area, as he was a constant disruptor, collecting tips, blocks, deflections, and rebounds that helped fuel the Rams’ second-chance opportunities and fast-break offense. His defensive contributions along with the tough defense of Peter Lehman ’25, Quinn Pullen ’25, Cody Mast ’25 and Josh Butler ’26 on their post players were critical in stifling Santa Clara’s attempts to build momentum.
Senior Jacob Gabbay (13 points) also played a crucial role, particularly in handling the press and orchestrating the Rams’ fast-break attack. Gabbay’s leadership in breaking the full-court pressure allowed the Rams to transition quickly and efficiently, leading to several fast-break points. Another key to the victory was the relentless attack of the rim by Butler, who added 13 points.
This victory not only boosts the Rams’ confidence but sets them up for a strong week ahead. With the Thacher Tournament starting Thursday, the Rams are gearing up for a rematch against Carpinteria, a team they will look to build on this momentum against. Tip off is at 5 pm at Thacher. If our defensive intensity and rebounding continue at this level, the Rams head into the tournament with high expectations for success.
