Epic Fourth-Quarter Rally Falls Short: Cate GVWP Battles Foothill Tech in Defensive Thriller

Yesterday January 23rd, our Cate girls water polo team traveled to the Ventura Aquatic Center for our second league meeting of the season with Foothill Tech. The final score of the match was a thrilling 5-6 defeat.

The story of the match was strong defensive showing by both squads. Foothill held a 2-0 lead at halftime and a 4-1 lead going into the fourth quarter. Both goalies played outstanding matches and each team had a strong defensive showing. Despite being down three going into the fourth, we felt good about our chances based on the opportunities we were getting up to that point in the game.

We would go on an epic fourth-quarter run to give ourselves a chance to tie the game up in regulation. With one minute left in the game, we scored on a power play to cut the lead to one. We were able to get a stop the next possession and have the ball with 20 seconds left. Unfortunately, Foothill was able to make a standout defensive play to put an end to the game and our awesome fourth-quarter rally.

Despite the loss, I was so proud of the resiliency, belief, and effort our girls showed in yesterday’s match. We were down multiple key players yesterday due to injury/illness and our girls still showed up and showed out. Just ten days ago we lost to this same Foothill team 14-3. I think the difference in score is a true indication of the effort and focus they have been putting into our training as of late.

Goal scorers for us were Ani Van Lynde ’25 (2), Maddie Kollock ’27 (1), Lucy Guilbert-Neal ’25 (1), Violet Monda ’27 (1). Daisy Gemberling ’25 played the whole match from the cage, racking up 10 saves and adding an assist.

Up next, we play Villanova on Tuesday at their home pool. Go Rams!
