Sufen Yen grew up in Taiwan, but has been living in the United States since moving to Dallas, Texas, as a student in 1981. After graduating from the University of Texas, Dallas, Sufen worked for a decade as a computer engineer. While in Dallas, Sufen began a crusade for good health within her Asian community, after the passing of a family member, by organizing lectures, establishing a food co-op, and translating health-related books into Chinese. During her final three years in Texas, Sufen also taught Chinese to heritage students, ages 7-12, at the Chinese School.
After moving to Santa Barbara in 1999, Sufen followed her heart and pursued her Teaching Credential at Antioch University. She began teaching Chinese at Santa Barbara Community College, and brought a dual enrollment program into both Santa Barbara and Carpinteria High Schools. In addition, Sufen taught Chinese at Santa Barbara Chinese School and Laguna Blanca School. Sufen is delighted to be part of the Cate community.
Sufen enjoys gardening, ceramics, knitting, backpacking, and reading. Whenever possible, she spends summer time with family and friends in Taiwan.
